Time to ask Greg anything

I am going to try and get some new posts out this weekend…I am working on a Light Hitting Infielder post and I know Jack is working on another Draft review….But, I thought I would kick off another edition of “ask Greg anything? Remember, as long as it is clean I will be completely honest…..

Also, I am looking for a couple new writers for the site…I would like people that do not have a problem doing what I ask them at first ( people to write some minor league profiles) eventually moving on to write other things…I do not want to make this a message board type place because we have enough of those already (and good ones to boot) so, If you are interested reach me through the contact button on the top left….

thanks and I did add a couple of comments on the diamond in the rough post…I think we are going to try and add a quick hits tab on the site where you can get up to date info (roster moves and stuff) I understand several are not fond of twitter….This tab will not be in the middle of the page but I will get with Bob to figure it out

Thanks Greg!! Great news on Coleman…

  • PREGNANT ROLLERSKATE

I take it you don’t have any info for questions 4&5?

    From Greg: completely missed these
    4) Will Eibner, Chapman, Adam, & Whit Merrifield sign?
    Yes, Yes, Yes

    5) What level will Chapman, Whit Merrifield & Eibner start @?
Idaho Falls, Idaho Falls, Burlington IMO

    6) Where is Cole White? I thought he was a plus pen arm from last yr’s draft, is he injured…
    Yes

  • PREGNANT ROLLERSKATE

    1) What happened to Juan Grateral? He started in A Burlington & was off to a good start & now he is not on any roster…
From Greg: he has battled injuries all year
    2) What is likely to happen to the O-Royals roster once Costa & Dyson arrive there? I see Costa is listed as on the 7-day DL on the Omaha roster & assume Dyson will be there soon…
From Greg: hopefully soon enough Kila and Gordon will be in the majors and it will work itself out
    3) Will Caldera stick @ AA when Osuna & Monty come off the DL & if so, who moves?
From Greg: at some point guys like Herges need to go and some of the AA arms need to move up…I think Osuna was moving up b4 the injury…Caldera is staying at AA

    4) Will Eibner, Chapman, Adam, & Whit Merrifield sign?

    5) What level will Chapman, Whit Merrifield & Eibner start @?

  • Dan1219

    Greg,
I know that the Royals don’t want to move him from catcher, but do you think that Will Myers could play shortstop at a high level? The reason that I ask is every time that I see or hear mention of Myers moving from catcher it is always to a corner position. Thanks

from Greg: I don’t think he will end up at SS…pretty tough spot for him

  • Dave21

    Greg,

What is the latest on Kelvin Herrera? Is he due back soon or is he done pitching for the year?

Dave: I am looking into this…his star is fading fast if he is hurt seriously again…unfortunate thing about pitchers

  • aaron

greg what do you know about noel that makes you so down on him. he is young and has a load of potential so he could be huge. i guess at 7 mil he should be a sure fire player. just want to get you read for his long term potential.

Aaron: Let’s just say I am playing the game a bit…but, I am not a fan (I will get into this some more in the next few weeks)

    Exactly Garrett

  • Garrett G

So if a no one signs like a jose guillen but we do not resign him either would we not get a pick?

  • Greg Schaum

    Greg Schaum

Not in top 10 but middle of the pack…the Arguellas deal could end up being a real eye sore..Medina finding Soria was a think of legends…. we did not even know Marte was under our control…better than some but not a top 10

  • kcbrian

How does our international scouting stack up with other organizations? Is Rene Francisco and his staff in the top 10 in the majors?

  • Garrett G

also greg, what are we looking at in terms of compensation picks? im not really positive on how that system works

from Greg: It really depends on what TYPE the Royals FA become…Dejesus, Guillen, Podsednik…those picks are made between the early rounds

  • Garrett G

Greg I agree Lamb really does not get enough credit for being the oyungest player in his league and still dominating. He was my sleeper pick for this year and he has delivered big time!

I think crow needs to be taken out of the list of the top prospects and lamb needs to be inserted in there.

Crows failures most likely due to his contract holdout makes me really happy we signed colon this early. I think he fits in with the system well. However when you say christian colon #4 pick it just doesnt fit he has limited upside and cant do one thing great. In my opinion his ceiling is david dejesus. what do you expect of colon once he has reached the major league level?

from Greg: I am going to do a flash forward 2010 draft review where I will suggest what I think each draft is capable of….try to get that done today

  • Jeff S.

Gut feeling, how many trades and how many players do the R’s trade before Aug. 1?

    Ryan

Great point…I agree with that..so u better be getting back a player that you think is equivalent to that pick

  • Ryan S

Greg you can comment on this as well, but I would not trade Pods unless someone gave up something of value. There is a pretty good chance that Pods is a type B FA so why not decline his option offer him arb. If he signs elsewhere then we get a comp pick which is probably more valuable than anything we would get in a trade. The worst that could happen is that he accepts arb and is back with us next year which wouldn’t be the end of the world.

read on mlbtraderumors.com that the royals were in ‚Äúlove‚ÄĚ with SS-Iglesias‚Ķ.now i am. is there any real chance at acquiring him?

From Greg: It would take more then DJ to get him…I would like to see the Royals package a DJ, Lough, Coleman maybe for Iglesias and Bowden

i would love to see that. we have about 10 really good pitching prospects. we need SS, OF, C and relief at ML level. i really think we’re (royals) getting to the point where we’re looking to move more of the veteran players and acquire more prospects at position of need.

would love to see all of our rumored players traded. we could still keep DDJ and acquire a top pick, being he’ll more than likely be a Type A fa.

    Iglesias and Bowden
    +
    CF (single A prospect) 5-tool
C (AA or AAA – immediate impact)

  • kyle 11

    greg,

do you think that the royals will make some trades this season? i think it is almost guaranteed, given the current contract situations with some players.

_DeJesus – bo sox for Iglesias, Bowden, Reddick???
From Greg: If you are getting Iglesias the Royals need to be prepared to lose a big prospect too…I think DJ for Bowden and Reddick is realistic
    _Guillen – anybody???
From Greg: I don’t think so, even with how he has played in RF…if u trade him it will be more of a dump for a single A maybe prospect IMO
    _Podsednik – ???
From Greg: Yes, I think he has some value…I believe he could be had for a NOW MRP or tweener prospect
_Bloomquist – i’ve seen his name mentioned…but would be unlikely IMO.
From Greg: Believe it or not, Bloomy has value…he is very well respected in the game and not just by Dayton…A team like Philly could use him…
_Davies or Banny – i’d like to keep Bannister, but would be open to davies departing.
From Greg: Davies might be DFA’d after Meche gets back…I think the patience with him is growing thin
_Aviles or Callaspo – would like to keeep these guys. great depth for next few years.
From Greg: The Royals tried hard to move AC in the off season but had ZERO interest…that might have changed…I don’t see Aviles moving

read on mlbtraderumors.com that the royals were in “love” with SS-Iglesias….now i am. is there any real chance at acquiring him?

From Greg: It would take more then DJ to get him…I would like to see the Royals package a DJ, Lough, Coleman maybe for Iglesias and Bowden

    thanks greg!
from Greg: U r welcome Kyle

  • kcbrian

Thanks for all of the replies. This is great stuff. Have the Royals truly changed their draft philosophy b/c the high school kids are asking too much or do they believe the college players are a better bet? Is this a matter of debate with the higher ups or is it settled and we will continue drafting a lot more college guys?

    from Greg:
I think across baseball high school guys are harder and harder to sign…especially past the 3rd round…Arbuckle likes a nice mix of both…But,I prefer the advanced college bat from elite programs (Eibner and Colon) over HS bats…of course the seasons Wieters and Smoak are having certainly make Dayton look good with Moose and Hoz having breakthrough minor league seasons…I don’t think anything is settled…Eibner at 2 was a surprise to many people..I expect a even mix,,,,u have to understand that college juniors (round 6 up) are a lot easier to sign then HS kids…

  • Mike Lewis

Do you think the Royals would be willing to include a top prospect along with DDJ or another player to land someone who will make a difference?

from Greg:Yes…I do…I mentioned the Cuban kid at SS Iglesias…but, because of the building embarrassment that is Arguellas I imagine the Royals have done their due diligence on his behavior

  • aaron

I love the great info on here greg. I have had a blast the last 4 years following the building of this future royals team. at times i cant tell if i like that more then the royals themselves. again thanks for the info and as i tell people around here (georgia) watch out the royals train is coming so watch out.

from Greg: I appreciate it Aaron we do it for all of you

  • Charlemagne

Really miss you on the radio, Greg, but your website is outstanding! I believe we should move Soria now … he’s been somewhat underwhelming this year and there are lots of RP prospects in the minors. Any chance of trading him to the Reds for Grandal plus CF prospect? Would the Bosox consider Iglesius for DeJesus?

from Greg:thank you…in the rebuilding mode as a second division team I would have moved Soria awhile ago…I have always felt the Royals wait to long to move players and their stock goes away…Philly might have won the series last year with Soria….But, his stock is still high so let’s see…as closers go the chance of him still being elite in 2012-13 when it matters would be hard to imagine….Someone told me once having a closer on a bad team is like owning a ferrari in a rain forest….i think u get the idea

Grandal can’t be traded…u can not trade draft picks until one year after that players draft…

I should be able to get the Carlixte info soon

Scott sharp probably does not get enough credit…Marty meier and Gregg kilby, steve Reynolds, Lonnie Goldberg

I think it is enough to get the opportunity. There are people with the Royals that felt Kila should have been the DH in 09 (easy to say that now after the year Jake had)
i would guess they have taken700 big league ab’s from him. When u r a perennial loser I say hell yes he should have received an opportunity at some point…or more of an opportunity.

  • Dan1219

    Greg,
I understand that Kila has a great understanding of the strike zone and is willing to take walks and has good power, the question I have is why do so many people act like he has been a great prospect for years, when he only has 2 1/2 years of really good production and none of those good seasons have been consecutive. With good years in 2005, 2008 and now this season is this really enough to convince the Royals as an organization that he is going to be a big part of the future as the DH.

  • Laurence

    1) Should they recast the Joker in the next Batman movie

    2) Favorite Tom Cruise movie

    3) With the Colon draft/signing, does it mean the Royals truly believes Wil Meyers is the starting catcher of the future?

  • Jeff S.

I was kidding about ARP but I am really interested about the international signings. Are you suggesting that someone is going to beat you to the report???

I think Lamb and Dwyer are in our top 5-6 propects, which does not include our las two 31 picks. Would you agree?

  • kcbrian

Is Carlixte still not signed b/c they are verifying his age?

Behind the scenes, who are some of the best front office people we have? Also, what impact has Mike Arbuckle had on our drafts since he came here from the Phillies?

  • Greg Schaum

I think so…the one guy that I do not is getting the respect from the fan base is John Lamb…I never hear his name mentioned by local media or most fans…the names they always say are Crow, Moose, Hoz, Montgomery, Myers…add Lamb to that mix and Dwyer is not far behind

I would not have an issue if Hosmer stayed at Wilmington all season…If he goes to AA then Clint Robinson will get the promotion to AAA which would be nice…But, Hosmer will get his time and with him there is no reason to rush at this age…next year is a different story

  • Brian M

    Hey Greg,

A couple questions….do you see Hosmer getting promoted to AA this year? I can completely see the need for Moustakas to remain with the Naturals during their playoff push however the Blue Rocks don’t really seem to be in contention this year. Would it be worthwhile to get Hosmer so experience on a playoff bound team since he’s raking at Wilmington anyway?

Are the signings of Eibner, Chapman or Adam expected anytime soon now that the Colon deal is out of the way and where might these remaining unsigned top draft picks be assigned once they’re in the system?

Thanks Greg, I appreciate the insight….

  • Jeff S.

    who is ARP?

  • Garrett G

where would you rank the royals system right now with the addition of colon among the rest of the league? gotta be top five right?

  • aaron

what are you hearing about the potential international players the royals may get? And if you could give us a list of who we got last year.

  • Big Lee

South Carolina used 1 pitcher tonight, Michael Roth. He had only thrown 23.3 innings this season, and his longest outing at SC was 4.3 innings. Yet tonight he spun a complete game 3-hitter. Maybe Royals draftees will get into tomorrow’s rematch with Clemson.

Merrifield was 0-4 with one K.

  • aaron

greg i think the royals a light years better than before dayton in the minors. they have good players all over the place. they at this point have at least 20 real prospects.

The other squads…to hard to tell with the Dominican Club
Surprise: Yordano Ventura, C Jin Ho-Shin, 3B Cheslor Cuthbert, OF Cameron Connor
Burlington: Claudio Bavera, Crawford Simmons, Gabe Macdougall
Idaho Falls: Greg Billo, Carlos Fortuna, INF Yowill Espinel, SS Justin Trapp, OF Lane Adams

  • Greg Schaum

    Greg Schaum

    kcbrian:
I think this is the same situation as when he got his 1st extension…if he is not willing to sign another extension then you have to look at trading him…it would be nice to see him get the chance to be the ace of a staff anchored by Montgomery, Dwyer, Lamb, and one other but if that is not going to happen his value *and i think everyone’s value is higher 1 plus year before their contract ends.

I think he is worth a gold mine…I think he brings a Halladay like return….Even though he has not been elite this season I think most believe he would flourish on a winning club….But, I know in a perfect world he wants to pitch for the Braves…I know this…

Right now he would bring a return of Kris Medlen (24 year old RHSP in the big leagues 4-1 3.33, 49K 12 BB 67 IP)
RHP Craig Kimbrel (22 year old future closer and ML ready …he is 1-0, 1.17, 35 K 8 BB 23 IP)
    SS …Mycal Jones (23 year old batting .283, 7 HR, 37 RBI, 58 K, 12 BB, 10 SB between Low A and High A
and one more like a LH ML ready RP Johnny Venters…I don’t know what do you think…if u think Freddie Freeman who is a great glove man at 1B you better know that Hosmer can play RF

Yes, I think that is do-able

  • aaron

as a whole how do you feel about the royals minor league system today compared to when dayton took over. thanks in advance

  • kcbrian

I am feeling greedy. Besides the first three picks we had this year, which players – if signed – would be the players we should watch?

Also, who are the players you are watching on the lower four teams (Burlington, Idaho Falls, AZL and DSL Royals)?

  • kcbrian

Although I am very encouraged by the minor leagues, I think Greinke will move on when his contract expires. Putting aside the fan backlash, wouldn’t his value be greater this year (trading deadline or the off-season) than waiting until the last year of his contract? And if we did trade him, what would you ask for (not specific players but level of prospects and/or major league guys)?

    Keep up the great work.
