Royals land the jewel of the International signing period

Download PDFAfter weeks of speculation it became official late Friday when the International Prospect League announced that the Royals have signed the #1 prospect in the international market this year for $3.05 million dollars according to agent Bruce Teperman.

Elier Hernandez a 5 tool centerfielder from the Dominican Republic becomes the highest paid international prospect ever by the Royals.

From Baseball America:  Hernandez has some of the best bat speed in Latin America. He’s strong but not bulky. He has the potential to hit for above-average power, but for now he has a level, line-drive swing.  Though he’s a good athlete, Hernandez is an average runner and projects as a corner outfielder, with enough arm strength to play right field. Many scouts see him as a high-risk, high-reward player. “If the hitting comes,” said one international scouting director, “he’s a superstar.”

About The Author

Clint Scoles

I grew up on the mean gravel roads of Iowa where I started my love for baseball from the age of 2. George Brett and the voice of Denny Matthews deepened my love even more for the Royals as my father and I spent summers listening to the team on our deck or in the car on our way to or from my little league and high school games. Sports was always the common bond that my father and I enjoyed and the Royals were in the center of that. I currently live in La Vista with my wife, two sons, two dogs and a pair of gross cats where we are grinding through until we can move somewhere warm when we retire. I own Casino Cab Company and Bluffs Affordable Auto Repair in Council Bluffs trying to build my 1% empire. If you are in the area you can find me at Omaha Storm Chasers games on most nights or just follow me on twitter @ClintScoles.

Dominican League unless they want more on hands work with him which could mean Arizona league. The Royals don’t push their international talent as hard as the Rangers who have started some 17 year olds in the Short season leagues

Mondesi’s 16th birthday is the 27th, meaning that’s the first day he’s permitted to sign.

  • kcShogun

Are we going to sign any others? Mondesi, a catcher…malava?

  • kcShogun

    What is July 27?

  • Marisols papi

YES! I’ve had this date circled on my calendar for a while and not the draft, for just this reason. Now I’m looking forward to July 27th!
