Suggestion for next week’s podcast…Is it time to talk about the Royals having 25 pitchers and only 15 position players on the 40 man roster. Assume it will change but what pitchers go to make room for position players if DM is truly looking for a utility infielder and outfielder? Assuming the Royals carry 13 pitchers as Ned likes, there will only be 3 position players on the 40 man roster and not on the ML roster…and none of those is Wil Myers.
Some of my thoughts…
The Royals really don’t need much of a bench since Ned doesn’t use his bench for situational hitting, late inning defense or resting starters anyway.
So why waste money on a free agent who will just get frustrated and never seeing the grass during a game (think Betancourt).
I would prefer to see Seratelli get a chance at one of the utility positions. He can play pretty much everywhere but short and might just hit decent like Abreu and Falu did. And will cost the major league minimum to play 20 games a year.
The other utility role (besides Hayes at catcher) can go to Falu or Abreu until Colon is ready to be called up mid year.
And Gordon and Butler can both back up 1st base.
This means the bench only costs $1.6M for 3 players. And if Ned has a light bulb moment and decides he can live with 12 pitchers, can keep Dyson to back up the outfield until Myers arrives.
Yes, I know there is not much power there, but who cares if they are only going to play 15 or 20 games a year.
Anyway, thought it might be worth a discussion or two on a future podcast.
