New reliever Vin Mazzaro allowed an inherited runner to score in the 8th to tie the game and then gave up a walkoff single in the 9th following his own throwing error on a pickoff attempt. ¬†Starter Nate Adcock had a solid start giving up 8 hits and one other run in his 7.1 innings tossing just 77 pitches in that time. ¬†The offense struggled to get much done scoring twice on five hits with catcher Max Ramirez driving in both runs, one on his 14th home run of the season. ¬†A loss by Nashville lowered Omaha’s MAGIC NUMBER to 3.

Midland Rockhounds 7 NW Arkansas Naturals 5

A big 6th inning put the Naturals in a bad spot Wednesday. ¬†Lefthander Mike Montgomery gave up 10 hits and four runs in his 5 innings on the mound including his seventeenth home run allowed of the season. ¬†Montgomery has missed more bats in his last three starts out, striking out 15 in 16.1 innings but he remains extremely hittable with 22 hits allowed in that time. ¬†Midland did most of their damage in the 6th scoring five runs with home runs off Montgomery and reliever Ethan Hollingsworth. ¬†Catcher Manny Pina hit his 5th home run since joining NW Arkansas and Yem Prades had a good day at the plate collecting three hits, scoring two runs and driving in another but it wasn’t enough for the Naturals.

Wilmington Blue Rocks 9 Potomac Nationals 1

A huge first inning paved the way to an easy win for the Rocks in their afternoon finale with Potomac.  The Rocks offense teamed three hits with three walks to get Potomac starter Robbie Ray out of the game with just two outs in the first inning and then punched a couple more hits off reliever Ryan Demmin to score seven runs.  Shortstop Orlando Calixte got the party started with a single to leadoff the game and then completed the scoring driving in two with a double in his second at bat of the inning.  With a seven run lead Jason Adam found the cruise control and drove his team to six scoreless innings to pick up his 5th win of the season.

Clinton LumberKings 10 Kane County Cougars 4

Ugly defense turned a lead into a deficit and eventually a big loss versus Clinton in game one of their three game homestand. ¬†Starter Angel Baez got off to a good start getting through three scoreless innings and getting setup with a 3-0 lead in that time but he was his own worst enemy in the 5th. ¬†After allowing a run in the 4th the Dominican right-hander uncorked two poor throws after fielding sac bunts to allow two runs to score and tie the game. ¬†After getting another out Baez allowed a two run home run to put the Cougars in a hole and end his day down 5-3. ¬†Reliever Jason Mitchell wouldn’t do much better giving up 5 runs (4 ER) the very next inning, putting Kane down 10-3 which would prove to be too much to overcome. ¬†Starter Kyle Zimmer will be on the hill trying to right the ship for Kane County who finds themselves two games behind Burlington for the last playoff spot.

Burlington Royals 2 Princeton Rays 0

There wasn’t much offense in this one but the Royals did just enough to bring home another win. ¬†Starting pitchers Kevin Brandt and Patrick Conroyl didn’t allow a run in their 12 innings while Brandt was perfect in his five but it was Conroy that would earn the win. ¬†Conroy wasn’t perfect but he wasn’t far off allowing just two hits and a pair of walks in his seven innings to earn his 5th win of the season. ¬†He would earn that win thanks to a 6th inning home run by Mark Threlkeld off reliever Alex Keudell that broke up the perfect game. ¬†Bubba Starling would lead off the 7th with a double and score on a pair of ground outs for an insurance run and an eventual win.

About The Author

Clint Scoles

I grew up on the mean gravel roads of Iowa where I started my love for baseball from the age of 2. George Brett and the voice of Denny Matthews deepened my love even more for the Royals as my father and I spent summers listening to the team on our deck or in the car on our way to or from my little league and high school games. Sports was always the common bond that my father and I enjoyed and the Royals were in the center of that. I currently live in La Vista with my wife, two sons, two dogs and a pair of gross cats where we are grinding through until we can move somewhere warm when we retire. I own Casino Cab Company and Bluffs Affordable Auto Repair in Council Bluffs trying to build my 1% empire. If you are in the area you can find me at Omaha Storm Chasers games on most nights or just follow me on twitter @ClintScoles.
