Sean O’Sullivan wasted a solid start by Vin Mazzaro Friday night allowing 4 runs in just 1/3 of an inning while giving up 2 home runs in the process and paving way to the first Storm Chasers loss of the year. Â While O’Sullivan was struggling the same couldn’t be said of Mazzaro who was solid going 6 strong innings while working around 5 hits and a walk while striking out 6. Â I’m sure it was a great relief to Vin who struggled so badly to start last season that he missed out on an opportunity to be the Royals 5th starter, while he won’t have that same opportunity this season any success is welcome considering starting pitching is Kansas City’s major weakness. Â The Storm Chasers bats couldn’t get much of a cushion for the pitchers connecting on 7 hits but unable to sustain many rallies due in part to an uncharacteristically weak night from the heart of the order as the 3-6 hitters in the Chasers lineup combined to go 1-14.

S:Â Keating (1)
Starter Jake Odorizzi had his best stuff last night working over the Hooks hitters for 8 strikeouts in 5 innings pounding the zone for 52 strikes out of his 76 pitches used. Â Odorizzi mixed his pitches well while keeping the ball low in the zone something he had a problem with last year. Â While Odorizzi was dominating on the mound the Naturals hitters got warmed up a bit connecting on a pair of home runs from Mario Lisson and Wil Myers after being shutout last night. Â Instead of the Naturals defense playing sloppy behind their pitchers it was the Hooks defense booting balls around the infield making 3 errors leading to a pair of Naturals unearned runs. Â Patrick Keating earned the save in the ninth working around a couple of hits and a walk.

The Blue Rocks couldn’t get much going offensively in their Carolina League opener against the Rangers affiliate Pelicans. Â Four different Myrtle Beach pitchers combined to limit the Rocks to just 6 hits while striking out 13, starter Cody Buckel put down the most Rock hitters striking out 7 while working around 3 walks and a couple singles. Â While the Pelicans pitchers were whiffing Rocks their hitters were clearing fences hitting 3 home runs including 2 by Tomas Telis. Â Wilmington starter Tyler Sample didn’t fair too badly despite giving up a couple solo home runs lasting 4.2 innings while giving up just 3 hits, 1 walk and striking out 5 while on the mound, his third run allowed was a runner that scored when reliever Thomas Melgarejo allowed a 2 run home run. Â According to John Sadak Sample’s fastball was working around 92 while he was fooling hitters with a diving change up. Â Cheslor Cuthbert became the fourth youngest Blue Rock ever in making his first start for the High A Royals affiliate, the young third baseman reached base three times twice via walks and registering the Rocks only extra base hit with a double.

Ya Carl’s stuff from what Greg pointed out last year sounds more like a starter good change up not an overwhelming amount of vela.

I like seeing Sam Runion’s name pop up…the Royals selected him just before the Nationals took Jordan Zimmerman…
Man, we could use Zimmerman now- he would be our ace
Runion is back from TJ and by all accounts is a great young man…so. A nice stat line for him
