It took over 540 pitches between the two teams, five plus hours and 16 innings but after all was said and done Tuesday afternoon the Storm Chasers took home their fourth victory in a row. ¬†It all began with starter Will Smith on the hill but once again the lefty struggled to fool AAA hitters giving up 6 runs on 8 hits but if you want to look for a small glimmer of positivity Will lowered the walks from last time out giving up just one free pass on the day. ¬†Despite all the runs allowed early by Smith his offense had actually staked him to a lead early with seven runs in the first three innings thanks to Johnny Giavotella’s 2 run home run in the 2nd and Irving Falu’s 3 run shot in the 3rd. ¬†The Express down 7-4 after that Falu homer answered back with 3 of their own in the 5th to tie the game at 7. That is where the two teams would stand for the next five innings thanks to both teams relief corps calming things down, Omaha reliever Jeremy Jeffress handled most of the damage for the Storm Chasers working three scoreless striking out 3 and working around a hit and a pair of walks. ¬†Still tied at 7 apiece the 10th inning brought a little offense after both teams worked together a run, for the the Chasers it was Derrick Robinson who came through with a one out hit to drive in Irving Falu to tie the game back up. ¬†Tied at 8 both teams pitching staffs would take control again with five innings of shutout ball from each until the bottom of the 16th when Irving Falu’s hustle would allow him to reach on and infield hit. ¬†Knotted at 8 with 2 down and a speedy somewhat light hitting Jarrod Dyson at the plate it would’ve appeared to most that the game was headed for the 17th inning but instead Dyson would come through with a lined shot to right center over the outstretched arm of the Express right-fielder ending the game with an improbable walkoff triple. ¬†While the walkoff triple won the game Falu’s effort in the 16th was special and shows why the Royals have kept him around to rub off on the young core of prospects.

Chris Dwyer’s up and down ride at AA continued on Tuesday with a 4 walk, 5 run performance in just 2.2 innings while hitting the strike zone with just 32 of 68 pitches and giving up two long balls. ¬†In a big hole the lineup couldn’t get much going to try to get things close going 4-11 with runners in scoring position and missing out on any chance to claw back in it. ¬†2011 Cuban signee Yem Prades is holding his own through four games played going 6 of 16 with a pair of doubles.

The Blue Rocks took advantage of some control issues from starter Danny Salazar Tuesday scoring off leadoff walks in the first and the second.  Brian Fletcher did the damage in the first driving in Whit Merrifield to put Wilmington on the board.  The Rocks would add another in the 2nd working around a leadoff walk and then adding their third run in the 4th with a leadoff double from Geulin Beltre and a two our RBI single by Luis Piterson.  Spotted with a lead Sugar Ray Marimon the Columbian born right hander was more than capable of handling it attacking the zone with 65% of his 71 pitches hitting the zone while working around 6 hits and walk during his 5.2 inning.  Those 5.2 innings were the longest bit of work for any Royals affiliate through the first round of starts and the 1 run allowed by Sugar gave him a win to show for his work.  Leondy Perez worked the final 3 innings allowing a run on 3 hits while striking out 4 to earn the save, he and Sugar will Piggyback to start the season.

I have a feeling that if Kane County starters on most nights can hang in there for 5 innings they’ll have plenty to show for their work with the Kane County offense and that is exactly what starter Aaron Brooks did in his second start not allowing a runner to get to third base while working around 3 singles and a couple walks putting himself in great shape to earn a win. ¬†With a few zeros on the board the Cougars offense awoke in the fourth with 2 out run scoring hits by Lane Adams and Justin Trapp to give Kane County a 2-0 lead. ¬†The Cougars up 2 wouldn’t be done there exploding for 5 more in the fifth with an RBI double from Daniel Mateo, an run scoring single by Jorge Bonifacio and three more driven in by Adams and Trapp on back to back doubles. ¬†A 7-0 lead would be more than enough for the bullpen to finish off things and set up Kane for an opportunity to win the series tomorrow in the three game finale.

About The Author

Clint Scoles

I grew up on the mean gravel roads of Iowa where I started my love for baseball from the age of 2. George Brett and the voice of Denny Matthews deepened my love even more for the Royals as my father and I spent summers listening to the team on our deck or in the car on our way to or from my little league and high school games. Sports was always the common bond that my father and I enjoyed and the Royals were in the center of that. I currently live in La Vista with my wife, two sons, two dogs and a pair of gross cats where we are grinding through until we can move somewhere warm when we retire. I own Casino Cab Company and Bluffs Affordable Auto Repair in Council Bluffs trying to build my 1% empire. If you are in the area you can find me at Omaha Storm Chasers games on most nights or just follow me on twitter @ClintScoles.
