10 names to start thinking about for the 2012 MLB draft
1- Lance McCullers JR-Jesuit HS, Tampa, 6’1 190 RHP- Lance’ dad played in the big leagues primarily with the Padres and had an excellent 3 year run between 1986-88. His son has been the #1 pick for this draft consistently over the last year. He is a true power pitcher with a 97 MPH heater, excellent power curve and a solid feel for his change up. A tremendous athlete who is also one of the top SS in the state of Florida when he is not pitching. He has a commitment to the University of Florida.
2- Nick Williams- HS, Galveston Ball TX, (Houston area) LH/LH CF 6’3, 195- I have been on Nick for over a year and especially jumped on this wagon when my good friend and excellent perfect game scout Todd Gold comped him to Ken Griffey Jr. 5 tool talent with electric energy and a excellent feel for the game.
3- Mark Appel- Stanford U- RHP, 6’5, 190- 4 pitch arm that touches 97 but sits in the 92-94 range with a plus slider and a consistent change up. He also has a 4th pitch that he can control in his cutter. Excellent career for the Cardinal and a guy that knows how to pitch.
4- Jake Barrett- ASU- RHP 6’3, 225- I am a huge Barrett fan and probably will end up slotting him 3rd on this list soon. But, when you talk about Barrett you talk about a fighter on the mound. Throws a free and easy 90-94 heater with a solid splitter and curve.
5- Kenny Diekroger Stanford- 6’2, 200 SS- Kenny was an excellent HS prospect but made it very clear he wanted to go to Palo Alto to be a Stanford Cardinal. A excellent student that has developed into a fine SS (there have been some concerns about him sticking at the position) but he is a gifted athlete with potential 20-20 big league numbers.
6- Lucas Giolito- HS, Harvard Westlake (Los Angeles area) 6’7 225- The big kid can bring some big time heat consistently sitting in the mid 9′s with a advanced feel for his secondary pitches. He is a devout long toss student and would be a terrific pick. I would not be surprised to see him be a top 3 selection in 2012.
7- Kevin Gausman- LSU- 6’4 185 RHP- Kevin turned down a offer from the Dodgers to attend LSU where he will be a draft eligible sophomore in 2012. Gausman displays excellent command on the bump throwing a heavy 94-95 fastball and a improved curve and change.
8- Trey Williams- HS, Valencia (So Cal) 6’2, 205 3B- Off the chart character giving him that well regarded 6th tool. He has tremendous pop from the right side of the plate which if you read my stuff enough you will know is a rare commodity in baseball.
9- Deven Marrero- ASU- SS 6’1 170- One of Eric Hosmer’s best friends and his former teammate at American Heritage HS in Miami. I saw Deven play LIVE in March and left a big fan. This kid is just a ball player and always seems to find himself in the right place. He plays gold glove quality defense and handles the bat well.
10- Joey Gallo- HS, Bishop Gorman, NV- 6’5 205 LH 3B Gallo is a classic LH slugger who also can throw 90 off the mound. He has been described as having an advanced feel for the game with power to give. Also a terrific runner with solid speed. He could be a top 5 guy before this is all said and done.
Also power hitting collegiate Victor Roache could be a factor …he bats from the right side but did have trouble with off speed stuff away in the Cape…however, if he improves that he has freakish power and would be a great future middle order hitter between Hoz and Moose
